History

Simple beginnings

From our first classes at the Foothill in July of 1994, the drummers of SambaLa' were mostly gringos and that continues to be the case. Our Brazilian "swing" has gotten better over the years from many hours of playing and studying with samba masters here in California and in Rio de Janeiro. We provide our drummers with many resources including authentic instruments, instructional CDs, and classes here and in Brazil.

Around the World

The SambaLa' bateria has played all around southern California as well as places beyond including the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas (1998), Seoul Korea (1999), and in the Rio Sambadrome during the parade of champions (2000).

The Drums

We purchased our first surdos (bass drums) from Marcos Santos who made them right in Long Beach, 6 of which we still play to this day! In the year 2000, we got our first drum sponsor Contemporanea of Brazil who now donates drums to our school every carnaval.
